Climate information for society
Rossby Centre focus our research within five research areas. Renate Wilcke is research leader for the area "Climate information for society".
Leading, accessible, credible and transparent climate knowledge and information is essential to enable informed decisions in today's society. One of the tasks of SMHI is to produce and make available knowledge, data, information and decision support based on historical, present and future climate for a variety of users both in Sweden and internationally. Rossby Centre contributes to SMHI‘s mission by conducting climate research, providing future climate data and information, contributing to the development of climate services and disseminating knowledge.
This research area focuses on transforming climate data into actionable insights that support decision-making across diverse sectors and communities. We do that within research projects as well as internal projects. We contribute by developing procedures, standards, and work-flows of advanced analysis tools, new climate indices, and guidelines, by that delivering high-quality climate data, information and indices. Dissemination and communication joins in as a natural building block for climate services as well as producing climate information. Engagement and two-way communication with users is crucial in ensuring the effective integration of research outcomes into SMHI’s climate service offering as well as directly to society.
Objectives
The main objectives of this research area are to drive the development of concepts and practical solutions for transforming climate data into actionable insights for and with stakeholders; to provide a base for society to effectively understand, adapt to, and mitigate the impacts of climate change. This will be done by:
- Driving the vision of SMHIs climate services towards accessible, up-to-date, understandable, scientifically based and actionable climate information for diverse audiences and stakeholders; together with other units at SMHI.
- Enhancing SMHI climate services by
- integrating newest data, well developed tools, optimized work-flows, and expert support.
- considering new types of services, e.g. based on global warming levels, e.g. building a narrative on climate extremes and e.g. developing new ways of combining global, regional, and local climate data for climate services.
- Building good communication channels within SMHI to departments working with climate information stakeholders.
- Keeping track of established channels.
- Via research projects.
- Developing chains of advanced methods by
- developing and applying concepts of routines and standards for model selection, bias adjustment, user-focused analysis and indexes.
- providing data and climate information like indices for impacts assessment.
- interaction between the climate science and climate service communities by introducing and integrating Rossby Centre’s scientific results to SMHI’s climate scenario service.
