What are observations?
An observation means that a value is measured with an instrument and recorded. Today, measurements and observations of the state of the atmosphere and hydrosphere come from various sources. They can be thermometers placed in so-called cages, in balloons or in airplanes. It can be buoys at sea, ships or instruments in waterways.

Why are there missing observations?
This could be due to the station being out of service for a period, or the value needing manual review before it can be approved.
