Nature-based solutions

Nature-based solutions involve using nature and natural processes to address various societal challenges, while benefiting biological diversity and human well-being. SMHI continues to develop climate and water information and find new methods for such solutions.

Climate change demands significant adaptation to meet the future's altered hydrology. Climate adaptation is a structured effort to reduce the negative and increase the positive effects of climate change. The aim is to find solutions that can provide multiple benefits for society.

So far, SMHI has mostly worked with large-scale engineering project design but now multifunctional approaches, such as nature-based solutions, are increasingly in demand in society. These are strategies that use nature and natural processes to deliver infrastructure, services, and integrated solutions to meet increasing societal challenges while promoting biological diversity and human well-being.

SMHI will continue to develop climate and water information and find new methods to quantify the benefits and effects of such solutions at different scales. This will be done through interdisciplinary approaches in collaboration with various societal actors.
