How is the ocean affected by climate change and what is the ocean’s role in the climate system? How is the Baltic Sea affected by a warmer climate and changes in the freshwater fluxes from land? These are the types of questions that SMHI’s research on ocean climate is trying to answer.

RCO (Rossby Centre Ocean model) is an oceanographic circulation model.This means the model calculates how the water flows and such thingswhich influences currents such as temperature, salinity and icecover. RCO is mostly used for the Baltic Sea and the Arctic Sea.

Numerical models are our main tools when doing oceanographic research. We develop and use a suite of sophisticated models describing the physical and biogeochemical processes in the sea. In some applications the models might be coupled together in a multi model system.

Sea threatens new treatment plant
