Cruise report from R/V Argos week 30, 1996

ReportsOceanography

In certain areas of the Baltic proper strong blooms of potentially toxic bluegreen algae (Nodularia) and dinoflagellates were observered. The observations were supported by sharp fluorescence maxima in the water. The extent of oxygen depleted, sulphidic, bottom water in the Gotland Basin had …

Cruise report from R/V Argos week 35, 1996

ReportsOceanography

In the Kattegat, biological sampling according to the Baltic Monitoring Program was carried out. Hydrogen sulphide was found in the Bornholm Basin and in the East Baltic (the Gotland Deep and the Fårö Deep). In the bottom water at station BY29 and in the Western Baltic (BY38, BY32, BY31) there was …

Cruise report from R/V Argos week 26, 1996

ReportsOceanography

In the eastern Skagerrak there were a bloom of a flagellate, Emiliania Huxlley, which gave the surface water a turkos colour and caused low visibility with secchii depths <3m. The surface temperatures varied between 14-15 deg in the Skagerrak-Kattegatt and between 11-13 in the Baltic Proper. The surface layer was generally depleted of nutrients. Fluorocens measurements indicated a subsurface bloom in the whole area between 10 and 20 depth. Continuously measurements of fluorocens at 4 m depth showed highest values just outside of Skagen and in the eastern Gotland basin. There were low oxygen values (< 2ml/l) below 70-100 m depth in the Bornholm basin, the Hanö bight and in the basins east, north and west of Gotland.

Cruise report from R/V Argos week 46, 1997

ReportsOceanography

A special sampling program was performed in the Hanö Bight. The winds during the expedition were moderate and had most of the time a direction from between south and east. The weather was mild with an air temperature of about 8°C. The surface water temperatures were normal. The thermocline was …

Cruise report from R/V Argos week 12, 1998

ReportsOceanography

The weather was either totally cloudy or quite clear with sunshine. The first part of the expedition had winds from the Southeast to the South, the later part winds from the West to the North. Sometimes the wind was within the limit of gale. The surface temperatures were between 1.5 and 3.5°C in …

Cruise report from R/V Argos week 8, 1999

ReportsOceanography

The weather during the first part of the expedition was dominated by strong northerly winds while during the later part weak to moderate winds from south to southwest dominated. Nutrient concentrations were at typical winter levels in all areas. High oxygen saturation and high fluorescence values …

Cruise report from R/V Argos week 39, 2000

ReportsOceanography

Low oxygen concentrations were found in the Laholm Bay 0.16 ml/l, in Skälderviken, 0.64 ml/l and in the Sound, just around 1 ml/l. In the rest of Kattegat, bottom water oxygen concentrations varied between 2 and 4.5 ml/l, highest in the northern part.

ReportsOceanography

The weather was windy, from 3 m/s to 22 m/s. The surface water temperatures were between 3 and 4.5°C in the Baltic proper, 2.5 and 4.5°C in the Sound and the Kattegatt. Oxygen concentrations below 2 ml/l were found at 140 m and deeper in both the eastern and the western Gotland basins.

ReportsOceanography

The lowest temterature of the surface water was 2.5C and the highest was 4.7C. Hydrogen sulphide was found only in the eastern Gotland Basin, from 125 and 130 meters in the Fårö and the Gotland Deep respectively. In the Skagerrak, the Kattegat, the Sound and in the southern Baltic (BY1 and the …

Cruise report from R/V Argos week 41, 1996

ReportsOceanography

The surface water temperatures varied between 12 -13 degrees in the Skagerrak-Kattegat area and between 10.5-12.5 in the Baltic Proper. The surface layer was depleted of nitrate and the rest of the nutrients showed low values in the Skagerrak-Kattegat. The oxygen situation in the Kattegat deep …
